[FIT] Fashion Institute of Technology 紐約流行設計學院

Fashion Institute of Technology在1944年成立，常簡稱FIT，可譯為紐約流行設計學院 (不過字面上的Technology就不譯了)，是一所紐約州的公立學校。

FIT屬SUNY系統﹙State University of New York﹚，全校約有10853位學生，其中女生占大多數(81%)；亞洲學生占百分之19，師生比1:13，該校的大學部熱門科系有市場與流行相觀工業Marketing/fashion/related industries，流行設計(服裝設計Fashion Design)以及廣告設計Advertising design。

FIT位於紐約市二十七街，沒有校園，有九棟學校建築﹙包括了FIT織品與配件博物館﹚，大學部提供了多種課程，並有許多短期的證書課程，但是碩士課程較少，此外，也規劃有海外的國際學程，是一所名符其實教育多元化的學院，該校出過非常多在服裝界頂頂有名，眾所皆知的設計大師，因此也吸引學生為了學習服裝設計而來到這個學校，由於FIT沒有提供MFA，因此沒有被USNEWS列入排名，但是FIT提供的碩士課程相當獨特，有興趣的人不要錯過喔!!

1. 可以簡單介紹FIT您唸的科系Exhibition Design有什麼特色嗎?
FIT’s Master of Arts program in Exhibition Design integrates everything from interior design to architecture, lighting to graphic design, industrial design to exhibit production. It is a field in which a deep understanding of audience, storytelling, and the psychology of space are essential for success. Our students are multifaceted designers whose artistry and technical skills shape the spaces of museums, expos, public and retail spaces, and more. The program features a multidisciplinary design curriculum including studies in exhibition design, lighting, graphics and model making, complemented by critical thinking, conceptual development and research skills comprising a final thesis project. Strongly rooted within the exhibition design industry, the program works actively with institutions and organizations representative of all areas of the profession including corporate, museum and public venues.

2. 請問FIT的上課環境如何? 註冊選課方便嗎?
Our campuses are clean and comfortable. There are also many international students in FIT, so you will learn different thinking, design process, culture, et cetera from different countries. We have computer lab (There are both PC and MAC), library, cafeteria, gym, and all kinds of facilities. FIT students can use our online information system for registration, or they can also go to registration office located in 1st floor, B building. It’s quite convenient in my experience.

3. 請問您在申請FIT時曾遇過什麼問題嗎? 有沒有心得跟學弟妹分享?
Basically, you almost can do most of application processes on internet. I just have a suggestion about that. Whenever you have any question, call them directly to ask. If you want to wait for their email reply, that could be a while. (It’s not just a while actually.) Besides, your application processes very depend on your department requirement, but I think the portfolio and S.O.P. are the most important things that you have to work very hard on them.

4. 請問FIT的學費和生活費大約多少呢?
The list below is our current tuition for each level:
Associate-level out-of-state residents: $1707.00/ semester
Baccalaureate-level out-of-state residents: $5570.00/ semester
Graduate-level out-of-state residents: $5733.00/ semester

Be aware that some departments require students to register for winter and summer semester. Although the tuition is much less than fall and spring semester, it is still an additional cost. You also need to plan for other expenses like fees, housing, books, and supplies.
These are just my personal experience for your information.
Housing: 500~1000/month (it very depends…)
Transportation: 81/month (if you choose not to live in our dorm.)
Others: 500~800/month

5. 請問FIT的台灣同學多嗎? 有沒有台灣同學會?
We just have a few Taiwanese students around ten now. Unfortunately, we don’t have Taiwanese student association here. However, all of us are very nice and friendly . We always help each other and keep in touch.

6. 請問FIT的校園安全如何?
It is safe and secure around the Chelsea neighborhoods. FIT occupies a whole city block – 27th street between 7th and 8th avenues in Manhattan. Our institute also has the security policy. You have to present your ID to a security to go into a building.

7. 請問FIT校園中的藝術與設計活動多嗎?
We have many design and art events, movies, exhibitions, and workshops in our campus, such as Fashion week, student portfolio exhibition, seminar, et cetera. FIT also encourage students to take advantage of everything New York City has to offer as one of the cultural, arts, and design centers of the world. A great deal of museums, galleries, and fantastic events are just several blocks away. Besides, FIT students can also visit MOMA (The museum of Modern Art) anytime for free.

8. 請問您認為FIT在師資評價好嗎? 它們的課程規劃如何?
It’s quite good in my experience. Take our program for example. A diverse faculty of working professionals brings real world experience and the latest developments in the field to the classroom. In addition to that, they also focus on academics achievement in the form of research, writing, critical thinking and analytical thinking skill development. FIT also evaluate their faculty every year by association researches and student surveys.

9. 請問您認為FIT的畢業生找工作容易嗎? 老師或學校有資源幫您嗎?
FIT Internship Center is available to assist students and alumni in all aspects of their career development from career assessment to job search skills and strategies. Counselors work with industry on career opportunities for full-time, part-time, freelance positions and summer employment.

During the fall semester, a job fair is held where employers recruit for part-time and full-time positions. In the spring, a large On-Campus Recruitment program takes place where many companies recruit for their personnel needs. In additions, throughout the year, employers are invited on campus to interview students and graduates to meet immediate hiring needs.

Our professors and institute resource provide a lot of information and opportunities for us. Now I am working in the design firm where I did my internship before.

FIT的學費在紐約市當中算是相當便宜,僅管研究所沒有許多藝術與設計的相關主修,但是大學部的主修, 還有學位證書的主修就相當豐富, 包括有配件設計, 玩具設計等特別的部門, 如果很想到紐約學藝術與設計, 對學位要求又不太高的, FIT是你選校名單上的首選喔!

5. 2004年12月Jewerly Lady說：我朋友幾年前唸過這個program- Accessory Design, 他是說任何妳自己diy做的作品都可以放在妳的作品集裡面, 不是非要妳做很讓人稱讚的完整的作品, 妳也可以用些現成的包包, 然後加入妳自己的idea去重新改造一翻, 讓學校方面知道妳能做到什麼樣的程度, 重點是妳有沒有夠creative! 因為妳就是不知道怎麼做才要去學校學的呀～ FIT不會這麼picky. 用皮革去做其它的東西也可以阿, 可以做個手機套或是筆套阿, 簡單一點的東西! 就用薄一點的皮, 用針縫或是用膠黏, 學校會看妳有了idea後, 怎麼去運用材料做東西. 用皮革做手環也可以阿, 在牛仔褲上加個皮革, 在皮革上縫上水鑽也可以阿.再來就是”Drawing test is given at the time of evaluation”這句話, 我想妳人不在美國的話, 應該可以問問學校是否有別方法可以取代. 以前我朋友是在申請後, 學校規定要在期限內交出一些指定的小project, 做完再寄去學校.希望這些對妳有幫助.

6. 2005年9月小雅問：FIT的AAS一年制跟兩年制的不同在哪? 我看網頁上是寫說唸一年制的條件必須要有4年大學畢業的學歷,還有必須要相關領域裡有工作的經驗…但是他最後有一段話不是很明白他的意思,麻煩版上厲害的人解釋給我聽一下You do not need to apply for the one-year program. The Admissions Committee will automatically place you in the one-year program if you are found eligible on the basis of the above criteria. 還有,我沒有看到他對TOEFL的要求,想請問有人知道須要考幾分嗎? 謝謝
